“Nature, Refuge”

Visual Arts
Archway Gallery
March 7 to April 2, 2026
1 month

In this divided and threatening world, finding a place of refuge becomes essentially necessary. Global warming, mass extinction, nuclear proliferation, rising authoritarianism and the scepter of war are increasingly apparent. To retain our basic humanity, we all need a place of refuge from a reality that seems to have betrayed us. And there is a truly reliable place of refuge around us — Nature. Carol Berger’s ceramics and Isabelle Perreau’s photographs, in this exhibition, seek to remind us that Nature is the ultimate, easily accessible refuge. Returning to our source we find that we are but a tiny piece of a miraculous phenomenon . And we can carry on…

DÉAMBULATIONS FRANCOPHONES - Francophone Wanderings A photography exhibit by Fikry Botros

Visual Arts
Alliance Française de Houston
From March 15 to May 30, 2026
Mon-Thurs 9:00am -43:30pm Fri 9:00am-2:00pm Sat 8:30am-12:00pm Sun Closed

The Alliance Française de Houston presents Francophone Wanderings, a photography exhibition by the local photographer Fikry Botros. The exhibition features a collection of photographs taken in various Francophone countries, of candid unguarded moments from everyday life. Rather than focusing on landmarks or spectacle, Francophone Wanderings centers on lived experience: in streets, cafés, markets, and public spaces where language, culture, and routine intersect. Taken across multiple francophone regions, the images reflect both the shared rhythms of daily life and the subtle distinctions shaped by place, history, and local customs. Fikry’s approach is unobtrusive and empathetic. His work resists staging or intervention, allowing gestures, expressions, and fleeting interactions to unfold naturally. The result is a body of work that feels intimate without being intrusive, and documentary without being didactic. Francophone Wanderings supports Alliance Française de Houston’s mission to promote Francophone cultures through arts and cultural programming. The exhibition will be on view at the Alliance Française in Houston from March 1st to May 30th and is open to the public during regular hours. Exhibition Details Title: Francophone Wanderings Artist: Fikry Botros Venue: Alliance Française de Houston Location: 427 Lovett Blvd, Houston TX, 77006 Dates: March 15 to May 30, 2026 Exhibition schedule: Mon-Thurs 9:00am -43:30pm Fri 9:00am-2:00pm Sat 8:30am-12:00pm Sun Closed Admission: Free and open to the public

Raw, intimate, and hauntingly beautiful, LOVE blurs the line between concert and theater in a powerful exploration of memory, grief, and connection. Set within the quiet intensity of a final farewell, spoken monologues unfold alongside the luminous music of Purcell and Dowland, including the aching strains of Flow My Tears and The Plaint. This bold new collaboration invites audiences into a space where music gives voice to the unspoken and silence carries its own weight. A singular artistic experience—stripped down, emotionally charged, and deeply human.

In 1963, Esther gave birth to Roland, the youngest sibling of a large family. Roland was born with a clubfoot that prevented him from standing. Against everyone's advice, she promised her son that he would be able to walk just like everyone else and have a wonderful life. From that moment on, Esther devoted herself fully to ensuring this promise came true. Spanning decades of hardships and miracles, this film is the story of an incredible destiny and the greatest love of all: a mother's love for her child. Based on Roland Perez’s book “Ma Mère, Dieu Et Sylvie Vartan” Published in France by Les Escales

Notre-Dame Cathedral: Past and Present

3:00 PM- 4:30 PM

Notre Dame Cathedral: Past and Present Lynda Kelly, Ph.D. Sunday, March 29 | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Victor Hugo called her “the queen of our cathedrals.” On April 15, 2019 the world watched in horror the collapse of the spire of Notre-Dame, devoured by flames that engulfed the entire roof. In this lecture we will tell the story of Notre-Dame from the inception of construction in the 12th century to the re-opening in December 2024. For the first time in its 860-year history, the cathedral has been completely restored. Limestone walls darkened by the accumulation of grime over the centuries have recovered their original ochre color. Murals that were barely visible before the restoration pop with vivid color. The cleaned stained-glass sparkles. Photographs taken by architect Frank Kelly will illustrate this transformation of the interior. $35 | In person and simulcast

Coiffure pour dames (Steel Magnolias) by Robert Harling - French adaptation by Michèle Laroque and Claire Nadeau

Performing Arts
Et Voila Theatre
April 10-11-17-18, 2026
8:00 PM

Set in a small-town hair salon, Coiffure pour dames (Steel Magnolias) centers on six women who gather regularly to share stories, laughter, and moments of vulnerability. Within this intimate space, the salon becomes more than a place of beauty—it is a refuge where friendship, mutual support, and emotional honesty flourish. The play explores the strength found in female solidarity and the importance of simply being present for one another through life’s joys and hardships. Written in 1987 by American playwright and screenwriter Robert Harling, the work is deeply personal, inspired by his own family history. Through lively, humorous, and often poignant conversations, Harling creates a sensitive portrait of resilience in the face of adversity. In 1990, the play was adapted for the French stage by Michèle Laroque and Claire Nadeau. This version remains faithful to the spirit of the original while relocating the action to the South West of France.

The Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie

Visual Arts
The Women's Institute of Houston
Sunday, April 12, 2026
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

The Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie Lynda Kelly, Ph.D. Sunday, April 12 | 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM The Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie are all that remains of the original royal palace located on the Île de la Cité. In the mid-14th century King Charles V moved the royal residence to the Louvre, leaving the royal administration, including the judiciary, on the island. The nation’s highest court of civil and criminal appeal is still located there. The Sainte Chapelle was built by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) to house relics of the Passion of Christ. The most famous of these was the Crown of Thorns, which King Louis IX purchased from the emperor of Constantinople in 1239 for a sum that greatly exceeded the cost of building the chapel. After the Revolution, the Crown was kept in the treasury of Notre-Dame. It was miraculously saved during the fire. This richly illustrated lecture will cover the architecture, interior decoration, and stained-glass windows of the Sainte-Chapelle, followed by the fascinating history and architecture of the Conciergerie. $35 | In person and simulcast

Petit Pays (Small Country: An African Childhood) Thursday, April 16 · 7:00 PM Fiction • Drama • Literary Adaptation (2020 · 1h53) Film in French with English subtitles Directed by Éric Barbier With Jean-Paul Rouve Admission: Free for members | $10 for non-members Set in the heart of Africa in the early 1990s, Petit Pays tells the deeply moving story of Gabriel, a carefree ten-year-old boy growing up in Burundi. Born to a French expatriate father and a Rwandan mother, Gabriel lives between cultures, languages, and identities — a reflection of the rich yet complex fabric of the Francophone world. Adapted from Gaël Faye’s acclaimed 2016 novel, the film captures the fragile beauty of childhood against the backdrop of rising political tensions that would soon lead to the Rwandan genocide and regional civil war. Through Gabriel’s eyes, we witness the loss of innocence as ethnic divisions and violence begin to fracture both his country and his family. A France–Belgium co-production, Petit Pays was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2021 César Awards and continues to resonate as a powerful exploration of memory, exile, and belonging within the global Francophone community.

Lumière, Le Cinema! Film Screening

Cinema
Oklahoma City Museum of Art
Thursday, April 16, 2026
7:00 pm

In one of those wonderful coincidences of history, lumière, the French word for “light,” was also the last name of brothers Auguste and Louis, whose brilliant invention, the cinematograph, helped to inaugurate the most beloved art form of the last 130 years. Institute Lumière director Thierry Frémaux uses 'Lumière, Le Cinema!' to guide the viewer through over a hundred shorts—some famous, some forgotten, some never before seen—directed by Lumière and company. In the process, Frémaux illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for quotidian and exotic microdocumentaries as well as the first ever fictional motion pictures. The result is not only a glorious re(telling) of the genesis of cinema but a profound meditation on the beautiful world captured—and the mysterious world imagined—by the Lumières.

Lumière, le cinéma!

Cinema
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Friday, April 17 and Sunday, April 19, 2026
7:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m.

This essential new documentary celebrates the pioneering achievements of the French entrepreneurs August and Louis Lumière in the late 19th century. Filmmaker and cinephile Thierry Frémaux (director of the Cannes Film Festival and co-founder of the Institut Lumière) narrates excerpts from new restorations of more than 100 comedies, dramas, and travelogues, set to an evocative score of period music by Gabriel Fauré, a contemporary of the Lumières. As a lesson in film history, it illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for the first motion pictures, and how they introduced the art of moving pictures to the world.
